Helping individuals successfully find work and prepare for careers is at the heart of the work of the Milwaukee Urban League. Our employment and training programs provide a variety of services to help individuals search and prepare for jobs that will improve their futures. Individuals seeking one-on-one assistance with online employment applications and resumes can find support at our Workforce Technology Center computer facility, which offers use of laptops and free internet access.
Drivers' Education Permit Classes
DUE TO THE RECENT OUTBREAK OF COVID-19, OUR IN-PERSON DRIVERS' EDUCATION CLASSES AND COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE CLASSES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICEIn cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Division of Motor Vehicles, MUL's Adult Drivers' Education participants complete a 12-hour program that prepares them to be responsible drivers, and attain a Drivers' License Permit upon successful completion of classroom instruction. Limited public transportation is a barrier to many Milwaukee residents looking for higher-paying jobs in the Milwaukee area. The Milwaukee Urban League’s Driver’s License Permit class helps eligible individuals secure a learner’s permit and behind the wheel lessons that get them closer to a driver’s license and employment. Commercial Driver's License Permit Training
Truck driving is a high-demand job option, with some drivers making up to $80,000 a year. Working with Milwaukee Area Technical College, Milwaukee Urban League offers a commercial driver’s license program, putting individuals on the road to family-sustaining employment. The CDL Permit Training prepares responsible drivers for an in-demand career in truck driving.
Employment Assistance Program
MUL's focus for over 101 years has been to provide pre-employment skills training to community residents, stabilize their economic conditions, and increase self-sufficiency. Employment Assistance Program (EAP) provides services to assist job-seekers of all ages and skill levels in preparing for employment, thereby simultaneously meeting the workforce demands of a diverse range of employers. Employment assistance includes resume preparation, interviewing skills, enhancing computer skills, and completing on-line job applications. MUL Employment Specialists provide EAP clients with one-on-one job coaching, a customized employment plan (including short- and long-term goals), employability training, and case management that includes ongoing monitoring. The Employment Assistance Program is funded by the Community Block Grant Employment Services, which assist individuals in certain zip codes or geographic areas with training and identifying employment opportunities.
Transform Milwaukee Transitional Jobs Program
The Milwaukee Urban League, in partnership with UMOS, Northcott Neighborhood House, and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center, has successfully operated the Transform Milwaukee Transitional Jobs program since January 2014. Transform Milwaukee Jobs program is an employment program that offers unemployed individuals immediate work. The purpose of this program is to enhance employment opportunities for people who have difficulty entering and succeeding in work.
Financial Opportunity Center
A good personal financial history is important for everything from low insurance and lending rates to finding a good job. Healthy and sustainable communities are made up of people who have living wage jobs and feel confident about their economic futures.The Financial Opportunity Center helps individuals earn the financial skills to establish and restore credit, develop and implement a budget, establish savings and checking accounts, and set long and short-term financial goals, including homeownership. LISC-Milwaukee and MUL are partnering to offer financial coaching, and education and low-cost financial products that build credit, savings, and assets. The Financial Opportunity Center (FOC) will provide one-on-one financial coaching and education and low-cost financial products that help build credit, savings, and assets.
