MILWAUKEE (Jan. 25, 2021) The Milwaukee Urban League (MUL) is pleased to be the recipient of a $50,000 grant from Stella & Chewy’s, a pet food supplier based in Oak Creek, WI, for a transportation initiative that will help MUL clients who work in outlying areas. The L*A*S*T* Mile, which stands for Leading Access to Success Transportation program, is designed to provide Milwaukee Urban League clients with temporary transportation support in order to successfully obtain or maintain gainful employment.

“We recognized an immediate need. We looked at the numbers and realized more than 19 percent of city households lack access to a car,” said Dr. Eve M. Hall, President and CEO of MUL. “The goal is to remove transportation as one of the largest barriers to job access. We are thankful to Stella and Chewy’s for making our goal possible.”

The L*A*S*T* Mile Program is open to any Milwaukee Urban League client who successfully completes program participation requirements prior to job placement and has an identified transportation need. This program will provide transportation to specific employment partners that are not accessible by public or other transportation services. MUL will receive additional support from local owners Dawn and Kevin Minley of American Transit Team. The Brookfield-based transit company will utilize their van fleet to provide service for MUL clients.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the Milwaukee Urban League on their new initiative that helps to address the transportation needs of those seeking and maintaining employment in the greater Milwaukee community,” said Marc Hill, CEO of Stella & Chewy’s. “We are proud to help more members of our community gain access to job opportunities.”

Milwaukee Urban League expects to launch the L*A*S*T Mile pilot initiative in February 2021 and encourages interested individuals to inquire early as space is limited. Despite COVID-19 plaguing the city of Milwaukee, MUL still offers virtual employment opportunities for individuals affected by the pandemic.

The Milwaukee Urban League leads through education, employment, and advocacy to achieve economic vibrancy and equal access to all industries and disciplines that position African Americans to create wealth and live a better quality of life. Milwaukee Urban League's vision is to ensure that Wisconsin becomes a top 10 place for African Americans to live and thrive and where the greater Milwaukee area becomes a leader in education and socioeconomic inclusion.
