Drive will meet the needs of students when school begins
(Milwaukee – August 10, 2020) The Milwaukee Urban League Guild’s annual effort to help students have the supplies needed for a successful school year is shifting to a online school supply drive for the 2020-21 school year. The Virtual Back-to-School Drive, which runs through August 31, provides support for several Milwaukee Public Schools that Milwaukee Urban League partners with in the 53206 and 53212 zip codes. Those zip codes are among the poorest areas of Milwaukee.
“Whether children attend school virtually or face-to-face, they still need pens, pencils, paper, and other supplies to complete their homework and learn,” says Milwaukee Urban League Guild president Cynthia Stokes-Murray. “Students, families, and teachers depend on the supplies donated by the community. Without the generous contributions of so many people, students would struggle.”
It is easy to participate in the Virtual Back-to School Supply Drive. Just visit the Milwaukee Urban League Guild website and click on the Visit the Registry Site link. Users are then directed to a special page on the Target website with links to all the items on the school supply list. After individuals make choices and check out, the materials are directly sent to the Guild, which will distribute the supplies to students.
“Students need our help and support now more than ever,” states Stokes-Murray. “Current economic conditions caused by COVID-19 are hitting poor families especially hard. Unless we all step up, children may be without needed supplies this year.”
The Milwaukee Urban League Guild was formed as an auxiliary in 1970 to support the Milwaukee Urban League. The goal of the Guild is to design fundraising opportunities and programs that support the community served by Milwaukee Urban League.
