MILWAUKEE (Jan. 15, 2021) – The Milwaukee Urban League is pleased to announce our partnership with the Light the Hoan collective. On Jan. 18, 2021, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Daniel Hoan Memorial Bridge will be lit with red, green and black from sunset to 2 A.M. The bridge is used as a symbol of pride and unity for the city of Milwaukee and is located on Interstate 794 in downtown Milwaukee.
“We’re excited to partner with the Milwaukee Urban League for MLK Day,” said Ian Abston, Co-founder of Light the Hoan. “This initiative has always been about more than just lights on a bridge. We are happy to shine light on this amazing organization in the community during these important times.”
Red and black are not only representative colors for Milwaukee Urban League; the three chosen colors are dedicated to the pan-African flag—symbolizing the African diaspora and celebrating Black liberation—a commemorative decision for civil rights activist Dr. King. Just last year, the Milwaukee Urban League celebrated 100 years of service. Our mission to lead and position African Americans in greater forms of education, employment and advocacy remain the same as we enter a new decade.
“We are truly appreciative to the Hoan committee for selecting us to bring light to one of the city’s iconic landmarks,” said Dr. Eve M. Hall, President and CEO of Milwaukee Urban League. “This collective effort honors the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and will highlight programming that compliments his work and ours as a community-based organization.”
The Milwaukee Urban League encourages those in need of support to take advantage of our beneficial programs. Offering GED and career path initiatives, virtual driver's education and virtual employment opportunities—we recognize our community’s need for our presence during these unprecedented times.
The Milwaukee Urban League leads through education, employment, and advocacy to achieve economic vibrancy and equal access to all industries and disciplines that position African Americans to create wealth and live a better quality of life. Milwaukee Urban League's vision is to ensure that Wisconsin becomes a top 10 place for African Americans to live and thrive and where the greater Milwaukee area becomes a leader in education and socioeconomic inclusion.
