There was no office when Greater Milwaukee Urban League opened in 1919. Programs supporting African Americans headed to Milwaukee as part of the Great Migration operated from the Abraham Lincoln House at 9th and Vine Streets. The shared space also housed support efforts for Eastern European immigrants also seeking better lives and new opportunities.
We are proud and humbled what has been accomplished during the last 105 years. Our education and employment programs continue to empower communities and change lives. Our advocacy efforts help families build generational wealth and protect their health.
This year, we are proud to honor the accomplishments of those who came before us and to make a commitment to the future. Celebrating 105 Years: Legacy & Impact will be a year-long fundraising effort to help GMUL build program capacity and explore new ways to support the community.
Earlier in September, we held a special “soft launch” of this effort with some of our longtime friends and supporters at the Baird Center. Joined by our 2024 Ball co-chairs Marty Brooks (President and CEO of the Wisconsin District Center) and Nina V. Johnson (Senior Vice President, U.S. Bank), we took the opportunity to introduce the Celebrating 105 Years: Legacy & Impact program. The evening was made even more perfect with performances from new friends from the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. We are especially grateful to GMUL Board member and Molson Coors Beverage Company Director of Supply Chain Strategic Partnerships Treanna Evans, for leading the charge to raise $1.5 million through this initiative by the end of 2025.
Look for a formal launch of this initiative soon. But as one of our dear friends and supporters, you can be part of the movement now by making a secure donation here.
